The Invisible Thread – 100 years of words (Halstead Press, 2012)
Lost
From “The Invisible Thread”
They are trawling for a woman
in the Bega lagoon. Lotus flowers
remember. They open and
close their white flesh;
delicate rings are her watery promise,
her last kiss to the men at noon.
Here are the orange uniforms.
Here is the generator, the incident station,
mud-combed and finger stroked,
she may be there, in the bed, maybe not.
Either way, they reckon she’s guilty.
Here are the fresh girls
on the shoreline. They shiver.
They touch their white flesh,
they are looking away from the naming
voices over black water.
